Dana White tends to always get his man (unless that man is named Fedor), and it has happened again. Except this time that man is a woman. In introducing a women's bantamweight division to the UFC, White has finally gotten his hooks into the phenom known as Ronda Rousey. He is so confident in Rousey's ability to be a star for the UFC that he has stated that her first UFC fight will headline a pay-per-view. This could be a risky move, since a woman has never even fought in the UFC before, let alone headline a PPV. Can Ronda Jean deliver at the box office?
If a recent poll run by the formidable Wrestling Observer is of any indication, then the answer is a resounding 'yes'. Readers were asked a number of questions regarding Rousey headlining a PPV, and the results were very positive in her favor. 70.1% or respondents who bought a UFC PPV in the past year said they would buy a show headlined by the Rowdy one. And that number jumps to 75% if Rousey fought Cristiane 'Cyborg' Santos. Further, a Rousey headlined show would cause over 30% of casual fans who rarely buy PPVs to purchase the event.
An additional poll run by the site asked which main event participant would most likely cause the respondent to purchase a PPV. Rousey was an overwhelming (65.3%) favorite over UFC champions Benson Henderson, Jose Aldo, Dominick Cruz, Demetrious Johnson and Renan Barao.
Whether Rousey (and, more importantly, women's MMA) will have a lasting, successful run in the UFC is yet to be seen, but the early results are favorable.
